Meter

Definition: a basic rhythmic structure of a verse or
lines in a verse
Example: Come live | with me | and be | my loveAnd we | will all | the plea|sures prove
That's a Iamb Meter
Significance: This term is important to poetry because it
helps you understand the difference between stressed and
unstressed words by their syllables. A meter makes poetry
better because it can make you have more emphasis
during the poem.

Rhythm

Definition: A regular repeated pattern of movement
or sound.

Example:
The wind in her hair over there
The chair that sat with her hair
Eyes on eyes
Fire and lye
in the river sky on I

Significance: This term is important to poetry
because they help keep a beat and they also
make the poem flow more easily which makes the
listener more into the poem.




 
Rhyme

Definition: a word, syllable, or line that has
a word that has or ends with a sound that
corresponds to another word
Example:  Silver jet soars across the sky
                   Just like a giant butterfly
The words sky and butterfly are rhyming in this poem.

Significance:  This term is important to poetry because
it just makes it sound better when you read it out loud.
Rhyming makes poetry better because it makes it funner
to read when there is other words rhyming with each other.

Onomatopoeia ;) yeaaaaaa
 
Definition: a sound that associates with the name of the object

Example: Car Crash: "BOOM"

Significance: Onomatopoeia is important to poetry because it makes it
more understandable to the reader to know what sound the object makes
or so they know what i going on. Onomatopoeia makes poetry better because
it makes it more interesting to the reader.



Personification

Definition: adding human characteristics/traits to
something that is non-human.
Example: The bees played hide and seek
with the flowers
Significance: Personification is important to poetry
because it gives more excitement to the poem. Personification
makes poetry better because it makes non- human things kind of come to life.
Imagery

Definition: a visual description involving
your 5 senses.
Example:










Significance:  Imagery is important to poetry because
when it is written you can kind of interact with what the
poet is writing and you can use your senses while
reading
Simile :)

Definition: comparing things with like or as.

ExampleI am as fast as a cheetah
Significance: This term  is important to poetry because
similes make the poetry more interesting. Simile
makes poetry better because it makes it funny and
more to think about what they are trying to say.

Repition

Repition


Definition: Somethiing repeated in a line or a phrase in a poem.
Example: If you can keep your head when all about you
                  Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
                 If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
"if' gets repeated many times in the poem.
Significance: Its important to poetry because it can
show that the word or phrase might mean something
significant.

Tone

Tone


Defintion:
deals with emotion, feelings,& attitude the
speaker has.
Example: The tone of the poem "O, Captain! My Captain!" was both grievous and joyful at the same time beacuse the speaker was talking about the death of Abraham Lincoln and the victory of the American Civil War.

Significance: Tone is important because it gives the reader a better understanding of emotions, feelings, and attitudes of the speaker.
Interpretation



Definition: Explaining or understanding the meaning of the poem in your own words.
Example: I think this poem is about what happens to someones dreams

DREAM DEFERRED
Langston Hughes

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over—
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

                                                               Or does it explode? 
Significance: The word interpretation is important to poetry because you can guess what the  poem means and not always be right, but you can get a clear understanding about it. This word adds more suspense on what the poem is meaning. It makes poetry better because it makes more people to get into it so they can figure the meaning of the poem.

Metaphor&Extened Metaphor


Definition:
Metaphor is something compared to an object
or thing.
Extended Metaphor is somehing compared to a group
of things.

Example:
School is like a rollercoaster you will never know
when there is going to be a dip.

Significance:
These two terms are important to poetry because
they are used as a figure of speech to have
something resamble it. It adds more exageration
to the poem.

Speaker


 
Definition: a person who speaks out to the audience.


Example: With glass, I am a man – or so I think!
A role to play when blessed with courtly drink:
A gin or two, then vintage port or wine
To pep me up and gift me with a shine.

Significance: A speaker is important to poetry because it shoes the point of view of something that is important to the poet. It makes poetry better because it can make the poem more understanding to people because you can figure out what they are talking about.

Symbol

Symbol: Something that represents
another person or thing.

Example: Love is represented
by a heart <3



Significance: Symbols show  emotion in the poetry and what the poet it trying to say.
The importance is that it tells you what something means.

Couplet

Couplet: two lines of a poem 

Example:So, till the judgement that yourself arise,
You live in this, and dwell in lovers' eyes."

Significance:  Cuplets help ending the part
of the poem usually by rhyming. It's important
to poetry because it helps the reader understand.
It makes poetry better because it can appeal to the
reader because yhu can see that it ryhmes. 

Stanza

Defintion: a group of lines in a poem

Example:  "I ask them to take a poem
and hold it up to the light
like a color slide"  

Significancea stanza helps seperate the movement of the poem and it sometimes help the ryhmiong stand out more. It makes poetry better because it makes it that more people can understand what the poem means.

Poetry


                                       

Definition: Poetry is something that doesn't always rhyme and can show how somebody is feeling.

Example: "Can I call you yard to yet.
   and believe you too can fly.
The sadness of a humming bird's bet,
is that you both know why."

Significance: I would study poetry because I can show how I feel and what i am thinking. I could use poetry to get better at it and so that people can get to know what my poetry is about. Poetry is important to language arts because poetry is somewhat apart of language it also shows all your five senses.
